Women who work in the trades are fighting stereotypes every day and one of the biggest hurdles they face is finding a career that is suitable for them. Electrical work is usually seen as a male-dominated sector but many females are proving that they can not only excel in this field but also provide a valuable service to the industry.
For many women interested in becoming an electrician, the first step is getting into vocational training. This can be hard enough but once they are on the course, it’s important that they have the support of those around them. Unfortunately, some would-be electricians have found that their colleagues and managers are not always supportive of their desire to pursue a trade and this can be especially challenging in an electrical environment.
This is why it’s so important that there are role models out there for those who are considering a career in the trades. This is exactly what Amy Barratt-Singh has been doing for the last four years with her YouTube channel and Instagram account, where she aims to inspire young women to get into the trades and particularly electrical work. Ideal Industries recently caught up with Amy to find out more about her journey so far and what she thinks needs to be done to attract more women into the trades and specifically to become electricians.
Are There Any Misconceptions About Female Electricians That You Would Like to Dispel?
It is true that there is a large amount of physical work involved in the trades but for female electricians, this can often be less of an issue than some might expect. One of the main reasons for this is that women tend to be lighter than their male counterparts and this can actually be an advantage in certain situations. It means that they can fit into crowded spaces more easily, as well as potentially saving time and money on hiring lifting equipment.
Having more women in the trades will not only help to break down stereotypes but will also bring different perspectives to the table, which can be beneficial when it comes to problem-solving and innovation within the field. It is clear that more work still needs to be done to encourage females into the trades and to give those who are already there the support they need, but there are signs that progress is being made.
There are still some issues that need to be tackled, however, such as the fact that women can still be victims of sexism in the industry. This can take the form of threatening notes left in lockers or even having their tools stolen and destroyed.
This is something that is not unique to electricians and can be experienced in other trades as well, but it is worth noting as it does need to be addressed.
