The UK’s best winter staycation destination is ‘magical’ – full list | Travel News | Travel

With the year nearly at a close, it’s the perfect time to squeeze in a relaxing mini-break before festivities kick off or plan a restful staycation for January.

But where are the best winter destinations in the UK?

According to a new study from Sally’s Cottages, pretty Bakewell in Derbyshire is the best destination for a winter staycation.

The team analysed each destination based on festive sentiment, average snowfall and walking routes to find the ideal spot.

They also looked at the number of permanent residents and social media metrics to find spots that might be a little quieter this festive season.

A spokesperson said: “Taking the top spot is the charming market town of Bakewell in Derbyshire. The town is adorned with twinkly lights and festive decorations at this time of year, allowing visitors to absorb the festive atmosphere while exploring one of the many walks such as the Hassop and River Wye Circular.”

Bakewell’s best rated attraction on Tripadvisor is Chatsworth House. Home to the Devonshire family, the stately home is one of the UK’s most spectacular.

A tourist ‘sharon c’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Chatsworth at Christmas is a magical delight. The outdoor Christmas markets were quirky and filled with lots of different unique pieces.”

Bakewell is also a fantastic base to explore the wider Peak District. Take a stroll along the River Wye or head out on the Monsal Trail.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a holiday in Bakewell without a slice of Bakewell tart. The shortcrust frangipane dessert is best served with custard or cream.

Many of the town’s cosy cafes serve the famous dessert and it’s the perfect warming treat after a brisk walk in the Peaks.
