Prague: EU city less than two hours from UK ranked among best | Europe | Travel

Forget Paris or Rome, Prague is fast becoming a romantic destination of choice, particularly in the colder months.

The city and Czech capital, is under two hours from the UK, making it a perfect weekend getaway. Autumn is a great time to visit and the city and it now ranks among the top-10 European city destinations to visit during the season.

Research by long-haul travel specialists Travelbag, found it ranked seventh among the most Instagrammed European cities being visited in autumn.

The study was supported by an analysis of Instagram hashtag usage, with 10,833 Instagram posts tagged under #autumninprague.

Photo backdrops such as the Astronomical Clock, Prague Castle and Charles Bridge, increase the opportunity for Instagrammable shots.

Even in colder weather the city’s outdoor cafés and markets, still serve up an array of local food and drink, and the autumn events calendar of cultural; events, concerns and exhibitions continues.

As the autumn months turn into the Christmas lead up, festive markets begin to spring up – with more than one to choose from.

Prague has around 880 monthly “in autumn” searches in connection with the city – only London, Paris, and Amsterdam see more.

London was the most ‘Instagrammed’ autumn destination in Europe, with 89,749 posts, followed by Paris with 69,253.

An array of budget airlines offer direct flights to Prague which take just under two hours from airports, including Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and Manchester.

Prices will depend on when you fly, but some of the low-cost airlines advertise certain one-way flights for under £20. These are likely to have restrictions and low availability so budget for more.

Things to do:

  • Visit Prague old town with underground dungeon
  • Sightseeing boat cruise on the Vltava
  • Visit Charles Bridge and Prague Castle
  • See the astronomical clock
  • Go on a ghost and legends walking tour of the city
  • Take a day trip to the haunting former concentration camp at Terezin
  • Eat a Klobásy with bread, mustard and pickle from a sausage stand on Wenceslas Square.
  • Drink beer and Becherovka in many of the cellar bars around the city.
